What Can You Expect From Good Movers?

Did you know that over half of the 11% of Americans who move every year do so between May and September? It makes sense because many of those who are relocating are graduating from college — or have children who are in school.

If you’re going to be moving in the next few months, you may be considering using professionals to help. Here are some of the perks you can expect when you hire good movers.

Their Reputation Precedes Them

Before you even call the moving company to ask for an estimate, you should do your homework. Ask friends, family, and coworkers if they can recommend a company. Once you have a few names, look at the online reviews for those companies.

You want to look for a company that has a good overall reputation, and that will pass a check of the Better Business Bureau with flying colors. Then, and only then, should you contact the movers and inquire about their availability.

Good Movers Do a Walk-Through

Any moving company worth its salt will perform a walk-through or virtual video survey (a live walk-through via computer) of your household or office before they give you a quote. After all, it’s going to cost more to move a home full of heavy antique furniture and boxes of books than it is a minimalist apartment filled with items from IKEA.

While we’re on the subject of estimates, remember that good movers won’t pressure you to sign a contract. They’ll understand that you want to get several different quotes. If you feel strong-armed into signing a contract or giving the company a deposit, that’s a red flag.

Movers Who Double as Packers

Professional movers have a lot of experience packing household items safely and securely. If you have a lot of fragile or delicate items, it’s smart to entrust the packing to the pros.

Again, make sure to mention your need for packing services when you first consult with a moving company. That way, they can factor packing into the total estimate and give you a more accurate quote.

They Will Explain Any Additional Fees

Moving companies are required to provide a valuation of the items they transport, but there are varying levels of liability. Make sure to ask the movers about the difference in cost between minimal protection, and full coverage.

Great movers will also let you know if your move will incur extra fees. If you live in a fifth-floor walk-up apartment, or on a narrow street that can’t accommodate a full-sized moving truck, you may be charged extra.

Good Movers Have Good Communication Skills

It’s imperative that you can get in touch with your movers — before, during, and after the move. Ideally, a professional moving company will provide you with several different phone numbers to text or call.

They will also return your calls or messages quickly. Lastly, they will keep in touch during the move. This is especially helpful in long-distance relocations, which may face complications due to bad weather, traffic or construction, or vehicular malfunctions.
