Trusted downsizing, facility move-ins, and full-service senior relocations across the Twin Cities and Rochester. Serving Minnesota families since 1919.
A senior move is not a regular move. It usually involves downsizing from a long-held family home into something significantly smaller: an apartment, a condo, or a unit inside an independent living, assisted living, or memory care community. Decades of possessions, furniture that will not fit the new floor plan, family heirlooms with real sentimental weight, and often a tight calendar driven by a facility move-in date all come together in a single project.
Done well, it is one of the most meaningful moves a family will ever do together. Done poorly, it is one of the most difficult.
Metcalf Moving & Storage has been moving Minnesota families since 1919. Over more than a century, we have handled the full range of senior moves. The straightforward downsize into a nearby ranch, the move from a four-bedroom family home into a studio apartment in a continuing care community, the estate clearing after a parent has passed, and everything in between. The skills that make a senior move go smoothly are not the same skills needed on a typical household move, and we have trained our crews for them specifically.
What Makes a Senior Move Different
A standard local move is largely a logistics problem: pack the house, load the truck, drive, unload, done. A senior move layers four additional challenges on top of that logistics problem, and any of them can derail the project.
The volume problem. Most seniors have accumulated 30 to 60 years of belongings in a home that was sized for raising a family. The destination is often one third to one quarter of the original square footage. That math has to be solved before the truck shows up. What goes with you, what goes to family members, what gets donated or sold, and what gets responsibly disposed of are all separate workflows, and they all have to happen on a schedule.
The emotional weight problem. Furniture, dishes, photos, holiday decorations, workshop tools, and quilts are not just stuff when they have been in a family for 40 years. Every decision carries history. A rushed, insensitive crew makes this harder. A patient, respectful crew that understands the pace this work requires makes an enormous difference.
The facility move-in problem. Independent living, assisted living, and memory care communities each have their own rules: move-in windows, elevator reservations, loading dock access, insurance certificates, approved pre-move inspections, and strict space constraints inside the unit. Many facilities will not let a crew in without specific paperwork submitted days in advance. We have moved into dozens of Twin Cities and Rochester senior living communities and know how to work inside their systems.
The timing problem. Senior moves rarely happen on a leisurely timeline. They are often triggered by a change in health, a fall, a hospitalization, or a sudden opening at a sought-after community. We regularly take senior moves on compressed timelines and know how to make that work without cutting corners.
Our Senior Moving Services
Every senior move is scoped to the family. The services we most commonly bring to the table include:
Senior move coordination. A single point of contact assigned to your family, managing the project from first conversation through final box unpacked. The coordinator handles the pre-move walk-through, floor-plan planning, facility paperwork, crew scheduling, and day-of oversight. This single-point-of-contact model is especially important for adult children managing a parent’s move from out of state.
Downsizing and floor-plan planning. Working from the new unit’s floor plan, we help decide which furniture physically fits and which pieces will leave the destination feeling crowded. This planning happens weeks before move day and prevents the common scenario where a treasured sofa arrives at the new apartment and will not fit through the door.
Full-service packing. Our crews are trained to pack with care for the kinds of items that matter in a senior household: china, crystal, framed photos, framed artwork, musical instruments, workshop tools, and sewing or hobby equipment. We can also pack selectively, leaving family members to handle deeply personal items themselves if that is preferred.
Sorting assistance for keep / donate / family / discard. For families that want it, our coordinators work alongside you (or on behalf of an out-of-state adult child) through the sort-and-decide process. We arrange donation pickups through local Minnesota charities and schedule disposal of anything that needs to go. For complex estates, we can refer trusted senior move manager partners who specialize in the sorting work itself.
Local and long-distance transportation. Local moves across the Twin Cities, Rochester, and the greater Minnesota area. Long-distance moves for seniors relocating to be closer to adult children in other states, handled through our United Van Lines and Mayflower Transit agency network.
Setup at the destination. Beds assembled and made. Furniture placed per the pre-planned floor plan. Kitchen boxes unpacked and dishes placed in cabinets. Clothing hung in the closets. Televisions set up and connected. This settle-in service turns move day from a stressful disruption into a first-night-at-home moment.
Storage. Climate-controlled storage for furniture and belongings that need to be held, whether that is a bridge during a renovation of the new unit, a holding period while family members decide on an heirloom, or longer-term storage of items an adult child will take later.
Estate clearing. When a senior move follows a loss, we handle the full clear-out of the family home, coordinating donation, estate sale handoff, family distribution, and disposal.
Senior Moving Across the Twin Cities and Rochester
With offices in St. Paul and Rochester, Metcalf serves senior families throughout southern and central Minnesota. We regularly move into senior living communities across:
- Minneapolis and St. Paul, including Highland Park, Macalester-Groveland, Summit Avenue, Crocus Hill, Lowertown, the North Loop, Northeast Minneapolis, and the surrounding suburbs.
- Rochester, including communities near the Mayo Clinic campus, Pill Hill, Kutzky Park, Peace Plaza, and along the Zumbro River corridor.
- The broader Minnesota market, from Duluth to Mankato and the lake country up north, through our long-distance network.
Our crews know the loading dock quirks at the big continuing care communities, the elevator reservation systems at downtown high-rises, and the paperwork each facility requires before move day.
Who We Work With
Senior moves rarely involve just one person. The typical conversation we have is with a combination of:
- The senior making the move.
- One or more adult children, often geographically scattered, coordinating the project.
- The destination community’s move-in coordinator.
- A senior move manager, when the family has engaged one for sorting work (the National Association of Senior Move Managers has member specialists across Minnesota).
- A real estate agent handling the sale of the family home, sometimes with staging requirements of their own.
- An estate attorney or financial planner, especially when the move is part of a broader long-term care plan.
Our coordinators are used to running the move as a group project with everyone on the thread, which is how it needs to work.
Why Minnesota Families Choose Metcalf
Over a century of experience. Metcalf has been moving Minnesota families since 1919. The crews that show up on your move day are our employees, trained to our standards, with senior-move specialization built into their training. We do not subcontract.
Right-sized, right-paced crews. Senior moves do not benefit from a large, fast crew. They benefit from the right-sized team working at the pace the household needs. We size and schedule each move to the family.
Twin Cities and Rochester coverage. With headquarters in St. Paul and a full operation in Rochester, we handle moves across the Twin Cities, down the US-52 corridor, through the Mayo Clinic / Destination Medical Center area, and across greater Minnesota under one roof.
Long-distance capability. As an authorized agent for United Van Lines and Mayflower Transit, we handle long-distance senior moves to any state. If a Minnesota senior is relocating to be near adult children elsewhere in the country, we manage the full move under one roof rather than handing off at the state line.
Insurance and facility-ready paperwork. Full insurance coverage, DOT-licensed interstate authority, and the certificates of insurance most senior living communities require before they will admit a moving crew.
